Wavelet Analysis Used for Partial Discharge Pattern Recognition

An increasing problem of ageing cable insulation requires a development of certain methods for online conditioning and offline assessment. Thus, Partial Discharge (PD) monitoring is the most effective technique for assessment of insulation condition. PD monitoring and analysis has become imperative for utilities as well as for equipment manufacturers as it causes deterioration of insulation system in high voltage electrical equipment. The analysis of PD includes the detection, recognition, and classification using various advanced mathematical tools and techniques. This paper describes the implementation of wavelet transform technique to reject noise from partial discharge measurements on HV devices. The obtained PD pattern represents the characteristics of PD signals and the discrete spectrum interference signal with it. The recognition results showed that the original PD waveform can be easily and effectively extracted thus analyzing the influence of wavelet decomposition technique.
